BackMap Raspberry Pi Powered Haptic Navigation System (video)
During this years TechCrunch Disrupt NY hackathon one team created BackMap a Raspberry Pi powered haptic navigation system which has been specifically to help visually impaired users navigate cities and indoor areas.
Check out the video below to learn more about the system which can be used inside or outdoors and allows you to navigate an area without the need to take your smart phone out of your bag.
Using the Raspberry Pi to control motors connected to each strap of the backpack the system cost roughly $40 to create a working prototype which hopefully will find its way into production in the near future. More details jump over to the TechCrunch website via the link below.
“I think that’s a pretty cool feature for people who are visually impaired, because if you walk into a store, you might not know how to navigate to certain places,” said Shashank Sharma.
